In Fond Remembrence

It is with heavy hearts that all of us at Addison Township mourn the loss of our former and beloved Highway Commissioner Sonja M. Peters. Not only was Sonja our highway commissioner, she was our friend.

Sonja joined our Township family on April 18, 1983. With her knowledge of real estate and real estate broker’s license she began in the Assessor’s office as a clerk under the administration of Kurt Strasser. In 1987 Sonja became the Deputy Assessor and in 1991 under the administration of Christopher Kachiroubas she became the Chief Deputy Assessor.

It was then in 1995 that Sonja was appointed to the position of Addison Township Highway Commissioner. She was then elected as Highway Commissioner in 1997. Sonja held the distinction for many years as the ONLY female Township highway commissioner in the State of Illinois. Needless to say Sonja blazed the trail for several female highway commissioners who now serve township government today.

Sonja’s responsibility for maintaining 40 miles of roadways, along with overseeing drainage ditches, culverts, noxious weeds, budgets, a dedicated staff of employees and along with many other tasks never caused her to lose focus on what mattered most in the position of highway commissioner; the residents of Addison Township.

In 2008 Sonja made a mixed emotion decision to hang up the CDL license and retire. The diligent and committed service the residents had come to know would continue as Sonja passed the torch to deputy highway commissioner Rich Kaske.

As a mother of 6, grandmother of 12 and great-grandmother of one, Sonja’s love and dedication for her family and this township never swayed. And we would like to add a little less know fact about Sonja; she was a fabulous artist! Those who were given one of her wonderful paintings sure have a very special gift!

Please remember Sonja and her family in your thoughts and prayers.
